Phases Annual Clean-up day!
Once again the students of Phases Learning Center went on their annual clean up and restoration project on key historical landmarks of Baguio City. The aim of this yearly project is to help the city by reminding the people of the history of the city, our history. We must never forget our history, because if we forget our history it would be forgetting a part of who we are as a people. If we do not know our history, then how are we going to interpret our future? This is the importance that we teach to our students in their history classes. Along with this forgotten history are the landmarks and monuments which have been forsaken and left to the mercy of the elements and pollution. The students have taken up the responsibility of cleaning up and restoring these monuments in order to remind the people of their existence and the parts of history that they represent.
Honestly ask yourself, have you ever noticed the existence of these monuments? Did you notice the horse statues drinking water on Abanao road? And if you did, do you ever wonder and try to find out why it stands there? I’ll bet that few of you knew that it represented the drinking area for animals that used to stand there. Did you ever wonder who Daniel Burnham, whom Burnham Park was named after, was? Did you know who George Malcolm was, or even know that his monument used to have glasses before they were stolen by vandals? Did you ever know of the existence of the monument at Kennon Road?Did you know that it is the monument of Colonel Lyman Walter Vere Kennon, the engineer whom Kennon Road was named after? Did you know? Did you ever bother to know?
We must never forget history, it is what has made the present what it is and will be the key for our future. It is the history of the city, our city. It is our history.
